Sustainable JC: Community Composting / Bokashi & Food Too Good to Waste Initiative

Welcome to Sustainable JC's Community Composting Campaign, In partnership with the US EPA's Food Too Good To Waste Education and Waste Reduction Program!!

We are seeking to educate Jersey City stakeholders about the importance of food waste reduction and provide a framework for recycling food scraps for use as a resource here locally; we also hope that the success of this program will ignite a higher level of consciousness by our institutions, including the school district, and individuals to better manage their overall waste streams.

By providing us with your contact information as part of this Survey, you will also receive occasional emails with updates and information about other upcoming sustainability events and projects. Please take a minute to answer a few general questions at the start of the Survey, so we can help you learn a bit more about these sustainability activities and can connect you most effectively with what interests you the most.

The questions that follow mostly relate to our Bokashi Composting initiative which makes recycling food scraps much more accessible to urban dwellers. This project focuses on neighborhood scale composting solutions by individuals and groups AND collaborative actions that will benefit community gardens and greenscapes across the city.

Food Waste and other organic waste streams are taking a great toll on our environment and pocketbooks. For example, did you know that 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten, that uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills and is the single largest component of U.S. municipal solid waste, accounting for a large portion of U.S. methane emissions ? http://www.nrdc.org/food/files/wasted-food-ip.pdf

Our hope and our aim is to help turn this around at the local level, one neighborhood at a time.

We hope you enjoy your visit!
